New York - Popular "Today Show" co-ancher Katie Couric killed a guy Thursday after words were exchanged in a Lower Manhattan bar, sources said.

Witnesses at Rockefeller Center reported seeing the perky NBC veteran leave the studio just minutes after finishing an interview with actor Matt Damon and head over to her favorite neighborhood tavern "to drink away all of her problems," the source said.

"It was about 9am and [Couric] was just enjoying a cocktail -- same as me," said one witness who asked to remain anonymous. "That's when she killed the guy."

"I was sitting right by her at the bar," said tourist and recovering alcoholic Dennis Farley. "She was so friendly and polite. She gave me an autograph for my wife back home. Then right after that she killed the guy."

While it's unclear whether Couric had any previous police record, coworkers and pedestrians alike were shocked by the allegations she killed a guy.

"I can't believe Katie, sweet adorable Katie killed a guy. It's so difficult to believe," said once-rotund Today Show weatherman and co-ancher Al Roker. "I'm looking forward to speaking to her about it tomorrow at work."

NYPD Spokesman Ed Hurley refused to speculate about the investigation or offer any hint of motivation or disclose the name of the guy Couric killed.

"All you reporters need to know is that Ms. Couric was in a bar and she killed a guy. That's all I know. Right now she is back at home enjoying brunch with friends and family. Let's give her some privacy, okay?"

According to an official NBC statement, Couric has a good chance of beating out both Diane Sawyer and Barbara Walters for an exclusive interview with herself should she ever be charged or convicted.

"The entire family at General Electric and NBC are saddened by the news that Katie Couric killed a guy, but it doesn't change the way we feel about her winning personality or strong work ethic. We are certain that America feels the same way and that's why she will be returning to work tomorrow as if she never killed anyone at all."
