Salt Lake City, UT Michelle Kwan, two-time
Olympic medalist and world champion figure skater, responsible
for numerous contributions to her sport, has also given young
Americans a new appreciation for Asian pornography.
According to industry insiders, during the final week of
Olympic competition, when the energetic 21-year-old skater
performed her short and long program, there was a massive
surge of people inquiring about Asian hardcore titles at adult
bookstores and mom & pop videos outlets around the nation.
"It doesn't take a genius to realize why we've sold
out of 'Tiny Asian Girls in Party Dresses' since the Olympics
began" said video store owner, Herb Stoller. "Michelle
Kwan has pretty much saved our business from bankruptcy."
Stoller was particularly pleased to see a large percentage
of the recent rentals were made by teenagers and young adults,
which is a radical change from the people who usually request
the X-rated material.
"Before Kwan came along, most of our customers were
the typical middle-aged Vietnam or Korean War vets just wanting
to reminisce about the glory days of pillaging farm communities,"
Stoller said. "The rest were guys who got hooked after
first seeing Mrs. Livingston, the Asian housekeeper on Courtship
of Eddie's father. But thankfully that's all changed."
Change is nothing new for purveyors of exclusive Asian pornography.
There was plenty of concern when Kristi Yamaguchi hung up
her ice skates after winning a gold medal at the 1992 Albertville
Games. Most believed after she retired, stacks of fetish videos
would gather dust on the shelves. Luckily for them, Yamaguchi
passed the torch on to Kwan and the industry was saved. The
question remains as to who will take over for Kwan.
"I'm not worried about that stuff anymore," Stoller
admitted. "People said the same exact thing when Katarina
Witt retired, but I gotta tell you, German hardcore has never
been better. Thank God for ice skaters."
