LOS ANGELES - In an effort to win back music fans
angered over lawsuits barring downloads of copyrighted music
from file swapping websites, the Recording Industry Association
of America (RIAA) made the stunning announced Monday they
were giving away tens of thousands of free internet modems
to the most rampant of piraters.
"The recording industry has heard your voices and we
have answered with the new Minskspeed 9600 bps modem,"
said Thomas Lee, president of the American Federation of Musicians.
"We are proud to finally be able to offer internet uses
the blazing speeds and and the most modern downloading technology
straight from the former Soviet Republic."
The RIAA, which represents the world's major music companies,
including Vivendi Universal, Sony, AOL Time Warner, EMI, and
Bertelsmann AG, have actively in the past used the courts
to pursue digital music pirates after discovering a 9 percent
dip in CD sales in 2002. Now they say they've had a change
of heart.
"The Internet is an exciting new frontier for the music
industry we're all ready to finally make that leap, as long
as people don't mind trading in their old modems for our new,
absolutely free Minskspeed 9600 and it's accompanying software--
as well as filling out a short questionnaire and survey.
"Getting a brand new modem is well worth the price of
providing a social security number and tax returns from the
last three years," said one music fan as he happily handed
over the internal modem recently removed from his new Dell
laptop.
"Hey, wait a minute. This plug looks kind of funny.
